General vs specialist shadowing. Specialist shadowing is valuable because it helps you explore different areas of dentistry, but many dental schools require or strongly prefer shadowing from a general dentist. Do not rely only on specialist shadowing unless you have verified that your target schools accept it.

General dentists give you a broader view of routine dental care, patient interaction, treatment planning, hygiene, restorative work, and the everyday responsibilities of dentistry. Specialist shadowing is still useful — it just shouldn't fully replace general dentist shadowing.

Subject: Pre-dental student requesting to shadow

Dear Dr. [Last Name],

My name is [Your Name] and I'm a [grade level] student at [school] exploring a career in dentistry. I'd love to learn from your practice by shadowing for a few hours, at whatever time is least disruptive for you.

I'm happy to sign any HIPAA or observer paperwork, follow your dress code, and stay as helpful or invisible as you'd like. Even one morning would mean a lot.

Thank you for your time.

Phone call script
Hi, my name is [Your Name]. I'm a pre-dental student at [school], and I'm calling to ask if Dr. [Last Name] ever lets students shadow for a few hours.

I'm flexible — early mornings, slow afternoons, anything that works for the office. I can also send a short intro email if that's easier.

Is there someone I should follow up with, or a better time to call back? Thank you so much.
Follow-up email (after 1 week of silence)
Subject: Following up — pre-dental shadowing request

Dear Dr. [Last Name],

I wanted to follow up on my note from last week about shadowing your practice. I know schedules are busy — I'm happy to wait for a slower season or visit on whichever day works best for you.

If shadowing isn't possible right now, even a 10-minute phone call about your path would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you again for your time.

Thank-you email (after shadowing)
Subject: Thank you for letting me shadow

Dear Dr. [Last Name],

Thank you so much for letting me spend [time] in your office on [date]. I learned a lot watching [a specific procedure or interaction] — it gave me a much clearer picture of what general dentistry actually looks like day to day.

I really appreciate the time you and your team took to answer my questions. I'd love to stay in touch as I continue down the pre-dental path.

Thank you again.
